Melbourne does it again with yet another exceptionally well designed fit-out. Great design is always en trend and this little beauty is no exception.
A bit of background:
The Penny Drop began as a little pop-up, where hundreds of bleary-eyed commuters dropped by each morning to get their freshly prepared coffees. After seeing their customer’s enthusiasm for the brand and realising that there was a gap in the market for a vibrant all-day eatery in Box Hill, the penny metaphorically dropped for the owners.
The café and restaurant sits at the base of the new Australian Taxation Office (ATO) building in Box Hill. The location of the café inspired an image of coins slipping from the ATO coffers through cracks in the floor and landing in the café and the design firm We Are Huntly played beautifully on the concept of “penny dropping.”
There are lots of clever references to the round shape of a coin too. This naturally led the designers to create a distinctly Art Deco aesthetic with all those wonderful, rounded edges being cleverly incorporated throughout.
